Football or soccer (English: football/soccer; informal form: sepak bola),[6][a] is a sport played between two teams of 11 players. The game uses a 68–70 cm (27–28 in) soccer ball and is played on a rectangular field. The aim of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team by moving the ball across the goal line into a goal guarded by the opposing team.
The game of football is governed by the Laws of the Game, a set of rules that have been in force since 1863 and have been maintained by the IFAB since 1886. During a match, players use their feet to control, kick, or pass the ball. Only the goalkeeper may use his hands and arms, but only within the penalty area. A football match usually consists of two 45-minute halves, with a total match time of 90 minutes. The team that has scored the most goals at the end of the match is the winner. If the score is still tied at the end of the match, then a draw, extra time or penalty shootout can be carried out, depending on the format of the tournament.[7]
Football is one of the most popular sports in the world, with around 250 million active players in more than 200 countries and territories. FIFA is the international governing body of football, governing the game at the international level. Under FIFA, there are six continental confederations that govern football in their respective regions, AFC, CAF, CONCACAF, CONMEBOL, OFC and UEFA. Of these confederations, CONMEBOL is the oldest, founded in 1916. National associations (e.g. the FA or JFA) are responsible for governing the game in their own countries both professionally and at an amateur level, and coordinating competitions in accordance with the Laws of the Game. The most popular international competitions are the FIFA World Cup and the FIFA Women’s World Cup. In addition, the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Women’s Champions League are the most prestigious European club competitions.
